Article originally appeared on 3News NZ – The dying industry will receive a shot in the arm as Auckland hosts New Zealand’s first-ever funeral trade show. Although it’s aimed at funeral providers, the general public will also get a chance to see how they could face their own mortality as 31 companies exhibit their wares during today’s one-day event.
Caskets, ashes urns, plaques, coffin art designers among others from New Zealand and Australian will be on show while funeral directors will also be able to provide a helping hand. Funeral Directors Association of NZ chief executive Katrina Shanks says this is the first exhibition of its kind in New Zealand, giving the public a chance to see how dying is their business.
“The funeral industry is a large industry that all of us will use at some point,” she said. “But it’s not often talked about, and we hope this show, even though it’s aimed at the trade, will go some way to demystifying aspects of it for those of the public who attend.”
There are about 30,000 deaths a year in New Zealand.
